TERMS OF REFERENCE INTERNSHIP POSITION
PROJECT NAME: IMPROVING THE STEWARDSHIP OF COASTAL COMMUNITIES TO
SAFEGUARD THE MARINE RESOURCES AND ECOSYSTEM IN RUFIJI-MAFIA-KIBITI BIOSPHERE RESERVE PHASE2
LOCATION: WWF MAFIA ISLAND OFFICE INTRODUCTION
The project intends to support community-based conservation initiatives incorporating new insights into strategy and implementation, capitalize on new opportunities, and collectively work through new and existing partnerships. The project will focus largely on elevating conservation efforts on Mafia Island – strengthening co-management for area-based marine conservation and sustainable whale shark conservation by working alongside governments, WATONET, local communities, and other key stakeholders. To inform progress and facilitate learning, the project objectives are embedded within the ACES community-based natural resource management conceptual framework, focused on collective action, strengthened management, expanded efforts, and coordination.
MAIN TASKS
Under the technical guidance of Seascape Programme Fisheries officer and in-charge of WWF Mafia office, the intern will be support in the delivery of the above named project in elevating conservation efforts in the project area – strengthening co-management for area-based marine conservation and sustainable whale shark by working alongside with governments, WATONET, local communities, and other key stakeholders.
DUTIES AND FUNCTION
- Leads community trainings on good governance practices and principles to promote Community Based Natural Resources (CBNRM) through Nature based Solution (NbS), climate smart, ICT4Fisheries, and integrated whale shark conservation and management approaches to enhance sustainable management of resources;
- Leads in awareness to promoting inclusive commemoration of different events planned for these activities by engaging WATONET and other stakeholders.
- Leads in designing and updating socioeconomic data collection tool for whale shark to compliment the present bi-annual ecological studies in collaboration with Whale shark Tour
Operators of Tanzania (WATONET) and Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI);
- Supports WATONET, district authority and other stakeholders to ensure a coherent community, youth and women engagement in whale shark conservation in Mafia Island;
- Engage women, youth and conservation groups as key players in conservation and the development of sustainable livelihoods for a fully multidimensional approach and
- Supports promotion of sustainable ecotourism activities in Mafia Island via whale shark monitoring, school clubs’ education, and other groups
REQUIRED QUALIFICATION
- Bachelor’s degree in either of the following: Marine Ecology, Project Management, Community Development, Governance of Natural Resources, Fisheries Management or Aquaculture or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Skills and knowledge on fisheries, environment, livelihood development and community development
- Skill and knowledge on whale shark conservation is and added advantage
- Experience with social media for developing marketing and promotion materials
REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCES
- Excellent oral and written communications skills in English,
- Knowledge of Adobe creative tools, such as Illustrator, InDesign, and Premiere Pro is an added advantage;
- Knowledge in developing field stories, fact sheets and info graphs;
- Cultural adaptability and sensitivity particularly for coastal community;
- Writing activity concept notes and activity reports
- Previous experience in awareness creation, community mobilization and gender aspects
- Report writing skills
