FZS is an international conservation organization working to protect biodiversity and wilderness areas at the ecosystem level for future generations through sustainable natural resource management, long-term collaborative partnerships, and by promoting environmental and social equity and justice.
We have been working with partners in Tanzania for more than 60 years and currently focus on three key landscapes: Serengeti, Mahale, and Nyerere-Selous. We work with our partners including conservation authorities, local communities and other implementers over the long term to provide practical technical and financial support, with minimum bureaucracy.
About The Position
As Tanzania Country Director you will provide leadership and critical support to the FZS landscape programs in Tanzania and lead the Tanzania Coordination Office in Arusha to support efficient delivery of site-based conservation impact. You will provide guidance and oversight to ensure the successful implementation of project activities and alignment with FZS’s global strategy. Furthermore, you will be responsible for cementing partnerships as well as identifying new opportunities to expand FZS’s conservation impact in Tanzania. The role involves high-level diplomacy, strong government relations, promoting conservation interests across sectors, leveraging impact with partners, and effectively managing FZS resources.
Your Tasks
- Provide leadership and strategic direction to align and tailor FZS Tanzania’s strategy with FZS’s global goals.
- Support and guide landscape programs to improve conservation outcomes
- Explore and identify new opportunities to expand FZS’ conservation footprint in Tanzania in line with FZS 2030 strategy
- Build and strengthen partnerships with government, donors, and stakeholders to enhance site-level conservation impacts
- Support fundraising efforts for site-based programs with the goal of diversifying funding sources to sustain and grow conservation initiatives and ensure responsible use of financial resources
- Advocate for conservation priorities in national policies
- Ensure compliance with FZS policies and Tanzanian regulations.
- Oversee national communications and stakeholder engagement as spokesperson for FZS in Tanzania.
- Support the integration of social safeguard mechanisms into conservation activities across all landscapes
- Support the professional development of program staff, fostering a culture of learning, innovation, and leadership
Your Profile
- Deep understanding of Tanzania’s political and conservation landscape.
- Advanced degree in a relevant field and 10+ years of experience in conservation management, including 5+ in senior roles.
- Proven ability in partnership development and stakeholder engagement.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal excellence.
- Fluency in English and Swahili.
