VACANCY: Short Term Assignment-Research Assistants
BACKGROUND
PATH’s Diabetes CarePak Project uses human-centered design to develop a bundled set of diabetes supplies that enable safe administration of insulin and diabetes selfcare.
Phase 3 of the Diabetes CarePak project is a mixed-methods, longitudinal randomized control study to explore the health impact and cost-effectiveness of the use of Diabetes CarePak by People Living with Diabetes (PLWD) in sixteen Districts of Tanzania. The participating districts include: Mbarali DC, Chunya DC, Kyela DC, Mbeya DC (Mbalizi), Mafinga DC, Iringa MC, Vwawa DC, Kwimba DC, Misungwi DC, Chato DC, Tarime TC, Maswa DC, Bariadi TC, Tabora MC, Shinyanga MC and Songea MC. The study is anticipated to run for six months beginning from July 2024.
The study work will involve up to 500 individual interviews with PLWD, half at facilities that have been randomly selected to receive the CarePak monthly for six months (intervention arm), and half at facilities that will not receive the kits (control arm) but will continue to receive standard medical care for their condition. The individual interviews will include both qualitative and quantitative questions as well as a quality-of-life questionnaire. PATH will provide a detailed description of the study procedures (“Standard Operating Procedures” or SOP) as well as all data collection tools and instructions for submitting data to PATH.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Master study questionnaires and standard operating procedures
- Master and demonstrate effective interviewing skills.
- Conduct and document informed consent to eligible research participants, as described in the study protocol and SOPs to ensure voluntary participation.
- Conduct in-person audio-recorded interviews using tablet computers with PLWD.
- Interview in English and Swahili, following the wording and order of questions in the survey.
- Maintain respect and confidentiality during interviews.
- Follow confidentiality procedures, as described in the protocol, training and study SOPs.
- Upload survey data from tablet to study server every day. Report any problems with uploading to the PATH Study Coordinator.
- Translate and transcribe audio recordings of in-depth interviews.
- Inform PATH Study Coordinator and participants of delays or changes in schedule.
- Act responsibly, treat participants and community with respect and demonstrate integrity at work.
- Perform other miscellaneous study-related duties as required.
Period of Implementation:
The Research Assistant shall be expected to provide services for 1 month from January 2025 to February 2025.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Diploma in nursing, clinical medicine, social work, statistics or any other related field.
- Experience conducting qualitative interviews.
- Experience with data collection for research studies.
- Experience with conducting surveys on tablet computer or mobile phones using Kobo collect, ODK Collect, Survey CTO (or, at ease using mobile devices).
- Fluent in Swahili and English.
- Good organizational skills and ability to follow study-specific procedures and guidelines reliably.
- Good verbal and written communication skills, People-oriented, Works well with women and men, people of all ages.
- Friendly demeanor and ability to establish rapport.
- Must be available for the entire training period and anticipated periods of data collection.
