Job Purpose: The successful candidate will support the overall business of commercial Cattle & small ruminants farming in and outside the country to enable Mbogo ranches to meet its objectives.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION FOR LIVESTOCK MANAGER.

Duties and responsibilities

  • To provide overall supervision of livestock activities on the farm including but not limited to cattle and Goat managers on a day-to-day basis
  • To manage the Boran stud herd to international standards of breeding programs and improve all cattle by corrective breeding and selection
  • Coordinate and plan breeding programs that are in line with the long-term breeding goals of the farm
  • To conduct basic performance testing of stud herd to better guide selection processes
  • To prepare quarterly budgets and avail cattle and goats for sale promptly to meet budget requirements
  • To assist farm colleagues with ensuring farm boundaries are safe and the overall environment & infrastructures of the farm are clean and safe
  • Ensure the work environment of your subordinates is positive and morale is high by initiating team-building exercises and experience while ensuring there is mutual respect and cooperation within the livestock department
  • To promote the farm by participating in preparing documentaries or short videos for the same purpose as per management instructions
  • To ensure the effectiveness of your subordinates and make sure their task is completed on daily basis in line with department wages by conducting performance evaluations
  • To control the discipline of livestock department employees in conformity with working standards/ Human resources manual
  • To prepare livestock annual production projection and submit it to the management
  • To optimize pasture management and utilization for better stock health and improved livestock performance
  • To ensure target weight is achieved promptly and that the stock is presented in an optional state to their given market
  • Special attention to be given to seasonal stocking ratios to ensure a focus on key classes’ stock
  • Timely organization and implementation of the main stock priorities
  • Contribute to the setting of farm policies, including development programs, projected livestock increases versus livestock performance and understanding the annual budget requirements in conjunction with the management
  • Record keeping including stock performance and live weights, livestock diagnostics, livestock tallies (Monthly stock reconciliation) and parasites monitoring, hours kept by casual staff, motorbike maintenance and a full comprehensive diary.
  • Monitoring livestock health check status and maintaining accurate records under farm policies
  • Ensure all livestock drugs are used per the manufacturer’s guidelines, specifically adhering to the outlined dose rate, stock suitability and associated withholding periods.
  • Abide by safe handling practices when handling and administering drugs, drenches or any other vet products
  • Formulate feed ratios, methods and fattening programs
  • Attendance at any off-farm field days, discussion groups or further education as required for either personal or professional development as agreed on by management
  • To provide timely and accurate reports to the director daily
  • Due to the nature of your work, you may be required to work outside working hours, late nights and holidays depending on various circumstances and needs of the company
  • To perform any other duties as may be assigned to you by the management in line with the livestock production

 

 

  • Proven work experience in a similar role or higher of at least 6 years (3 years for cattle & 3 years for Goat commercial farming)
  • Bachelor degree in Animal Production, veterinary medicine, breeding or equivalent
  • Working experience in commercial cattle and small ruminants is highly recommended
  • Familiar with traditional and modern training methods (Mentoring, coaching, on-the-job, e-learning etc
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to plan, multitask and manage time effectively
  • Good knowledge of talent management and succession planning methods
  • Sense of ownership and pride in personal performance and its impact on company’s
  • Age Limit (Between 30-50 years)
