Position Description
North Mara Gold Mine Limited is seeking to recruit Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join and grow their team. You will be expected to align to the Barrick DNA and to operate within our mining assets with our best people teams. You will contribute in a safe and cost-effective manner to achieve targets in accordance with Mine Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures and ensure daily targets are met.
About North Mara
The North Mara gold mine is in north-west Tanzania in the Tarime district of the Mara region. It is around 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria and 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border.
North Mara started commercial production in 2002. The mine is a combined open pit and underground operation from two deposits, Gokona (underground) and Nyabigena (open pit).
Responsibilities
- Provide a strong contribution to the site safety culture and programs.
- Promote and ensure completion of Field Level Risk assessments and appropriate Job Hazard Analyses as part of the daily work process.
- Set best practice standards, guidelines and procedures for all geological and geotechnical tasks being undertaken by Geologists and Geology Technicians.
- Ensure required tasks are completed to defined scopes of work as well as established grade control, open pit and EHS procedures + Barrick’s guidelines.
- To provide geotechnical advice for the other schemes and design in mining activities.
- Professional and Technical Excellence in geotechnical aspects.
- To report to the Geology Manager on regular basis on performance against budget and programme.
- To aid the Geotechnical Team to manage the resources to deliver the agreed outcomes.
- To ensure that the Geotechnical Team have adequate training and resources.
- To aid the Geotechnical Team Leader manage external resources used by the
- Geotechnical Team
- To prepare designs, reports, specifications and other deliverables for geotechnical schemes.
- To allocate tasks to other members of the Geotechnical Team and monitor progress.
- To monitor the pit designs produced to ensure they meet the design briefs.
- To ensure the quality system is actively applied to all geotechnical schemes in pit and storage facilities.
- Facilitate in achieving targets and business improvement
Qualification requirements
- Diploma in Geology.
- Current Tanzanian light vehicle drivers license.
- Familiarity with and commitment to OH&S and Environmental Management best practice.
- High level team and supervisory management skills
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong planning, time management and analytical skills.
- Highly organized, systematic and meticulous.
- Advanced Mining Software (Surpac/Vulcan) user
Experience and Competencies needed.
- 3-5 years’ experience in mine and exploration geology, 3 years’ experience in operational leadership role
- Experience in managing Geology consumables and costs.
- The ability to coach, mentor and train Geology staff to assume higher positions of responsibility.
- Familiar with the mining environment and its associated hazards
- Actively recognizes and manages hazards in their working environment.
- Able to drive a light vehicle according to LV standard operating procedure.
- Able to learn rapidly from attempts, building positive experience.
- Co-ordinated with a big picture focus but also an eye for detail
- Able to investigate, inform and influence without intimidating or instructing.
- Values leadership, working across knowledge fields and parallel processing of different options.
