ABOUT GEITA GOLD MINING LTD

Geita Gold Mining Ltd (GGML) is Tanzania’s leading gold producer with a single operation in Geita Region. The company is a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti, an international gold producer headquartered in South Africa, with operations in more than ten countries, in four continents. The mine is situated in the Lake Victoria Gold fields of Northwestern Tanzania, only about 85 km’s from Mwanza City and 20 km’s Southeast of the nearest point of Lake Victoria. The company has its head office in Geita, only 5 Km’s west of the fast-growing town of Geita, and also a supporting office in Dar es Salaam. Applications are invited from ambitious, energetic and performance driven individuals to fill in vacant position(s) mentioned below:

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE: 

The purpose of the role is to execute and provide leadership and technical specialist input to the company Community Engagement activities, by conducting strategic social analysis, engagement, and social planning required to maintain the mine’s social license to operate. The role holder is expected to build and sustain confidence to enhance trust, mutual and sustainable partnership between the Company and external stakeholders in the surrounding communities.

 

            QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology, Community Development / Relations, Development studies, Laws, Public Relations, or any other related academic background.
  • A Master’s degree in related fields will be an added advantage.
  • A post qualification in community development / relations will be an added advantage

EXPERIENCE:

  • 8 to 10 years practical experience in the mining industry with at least 3 of them serving in the senior / same level / capacity or higher.
  • Proven practical experience in Social and Economic Development.
  • Experience in other areas relevant to mining industry (or similar) will be an added advantage.

 

M         MAIN OR KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Regularly conduct strategic social analysis, engagement, and social planning to maintain the social license to operate
  • Build and sustain confidence to enhance trust and mutual and sustainable partnership between the Company and external stakeholders in the surrounding communities
  • Ensure stakeholders are involved in creating greater inclusion and accountability about GGML-funded community projects, and to support the day-to-day activities related to the preparation and Implementation of other similar projects and programs such as the Land access Action Plans, Social Economic Development Plans/Projects, Stakeholders Engagement and Mine Closure Plan, promotion of Local Content Plans and support for Small Scale and Artisan Miners Development.
  • Ensure the whole of the Special Mining License area is secured and free from illegal mining, deforestation, farming, grazing ad all other forms of unlawful human activities that may lead to depletion of resources and/or jeopardize the Company’s Health, Safety and Environmental Standards
  • Provide leadership and technical guidance to Senior Supervisors to achieve the targets, outputs, and performance indicators expected from all employees working under him in line with the Company’s approved Business Plan and Organizational structure
  • Take appropriate action as deemed necessary to ensure that good practice of social analysis is systematically addressed in engaging stakeholders on various matters that may affect the Social License to operate. This shall consider the social and political factors that can enhance or adversely affect cooperation and collaboration between the Company and the external stakeholders.
  • Ensure discipline and good conduct among all employees subordinate to him, and to identify, advise and facilitate various forms of capacity building to the team to ensure that the workforce delivers the maximum potential it has in attaining the targets in line with the Company’s Business Plan
  • Prepare detailed and justifiable budget, work plans and initiate annual budgets to ensure all necessary tools, means, transport and other resources are properly justified and presented to the Senior Manager – Sustainability.
  • Ensure the Company’s Social Closure Plan is implemented, updated and properly and regularly communicated to the stakeholders accordingly.
  • Assist and advise identification of important stakeholders (consumers associations, charitable organizations, community-based organizations, etc.) which are development-oriented and can contribute to the Company’s Social and Economic Development activities.
  • Develop Plans, Terms of Reference (ToRs), Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to be used by the team in executing their tasks to meet the agreed KPIs.
  • Translate Policies, Procedures and Guidelines for stakeholder consumption where applicable and to ensure that the stakeholder community is aware and conversant with the Company’s values, standards and other appropriate ways of doing its business.
  • Foster and facilitate networks of stakeholders that can assist in ensuring the community’s understanding and support of the Company’s social support activities.
  • Devise innovative means to improve the sharing of information on GGML-supported community projects and other Social and Economic Development initiatives; thereby drawing in civil society groups, academia, NGOs and others to engage in the general Community Social Investment processes.
  • Engage Management and, where applicable, consultants in preparing the Company’s Business Plans addressing matters of social relations of the Company.
  • Organize and moderate forums such as conferences, town halls, workshops, site visits and exchange programs between internal and external stakeholders to create and maintain common understanding, cohesion and mutually beneficial co-existence and ensure the Social Licence to operate is maintained.
  • Champion and mainstream inclusion programs based on gender, youths, people living disabilities, issues of HIV/AIDS, etc., in planning and implementing various social and economic development programs funded by the Company.
  • Promote the practice and respect for Human Rights among the team and external stakeholders.
  • Strategic social analysis, engagement, and social planning to maintain the social license to operate
  • Plans, Terms of Reference (ToRs), Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to be used by the team in executing their tasks to meet the agreed KPIs.
  • Section annual budget preparation
  • Leadership and technical guidance to community engagement team.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with good presentation and facilitation skills
  • Strong written and spoken English essential, including demonstrated report writing abilities.
  • Ability to work and communicate with people at all levels/good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups
