Position Description
North Mara Gold Mine Limited is seeking to recruit Medical Officer to join and grow their team. You will be expected to align to the Barrick DNA and to operate within our mining assets with our best people teams. You will contribute in a safe and cost-effective manner to achieve targets in accordance with Mine Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures and ensure daily targets are met.
About North Mara
The North Mara gold mine is located in north-west Tanzania in the Tarime district of the Mara region. It is around 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria and 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border.
North Mara started commercial production in 2002. The mine is a combined open pit and underground operation from two deposits, Gokona (underground) and Nyabigena (open pit).
Responsibilities
- Providing primary health care on a daily basis, including normal and on call consultations, providing medical advice to employees, infectious diseases, disease outbreaks, vaccination and travel advice.
- Primary stabilization of injured on the scene of the accident and patient monitoring in anticipation of evacuation to the nearest appropriate medical facility.
- Participating in the physical medical evacuation process, by road or air, as circumstances require.
- Ensuring accurate and appropriate documentation, and making sure that each interaction with Barrick employees, contractors or visitors is accurately and sufficiently documented.
- Making sure that doctor-patient interaction is confidential and ethically professional.
- Performing Occupational Health Surveillance task as per Site health risk assessment based on job exposure survey; so as to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for all. This will involve participation in assessing employees’ fitness for work and possibility for workplace adjustments, and mitigation of health risks.
- Maintaining a high level of clinical knowledge by educating self and actively engaging in opportunities for continuous medical education.
- Ensuring a working knowledge of the Clinic-based Equipment.
- Demonstrate adequate knowledge and skills in the use of the emergency medical equipment in the ambulance available at North Mara Clinic.
- Work hand to hand with Industrial hygiene section to train employees on occupational health hazards, analyse industrial hygiene exposure surveys.
- Implement all occupational health programs, employee assistance programs, malaria control program, health promotion programs and HIV /AIDS control program.
- Ensure Annual Health Risk Assessment is conducted and reviewed every year or any new operation.
- Ensuring a good working knowledge and inventory control of all equipment and medical supplies at the clinic and maintaining records of all clinic equipment, so as to advise when equipment is required to be upgraded, calibrated, maintained or replaced in a timely manner as necessary.
- Involved in planning and implementation of health promotion activities; and delivery of awareness sessions/ trainings to employees.
- Assisting with monitoring and evaluation of health initiatives/programs e.g. PHE scheme, First Aid, HIV/AIDS Workplace program, Malaria, Community health initiatives, etc
- Maintaining a positive relationship with other doctors and all staff members and working in accordance with the terms and conditions of employment.
- Liaising with Medical Insurance Companies and visiting Specialists/Consultants.
- Identifying opportunities for smooth clinic operation.
- Identifying opportunities for personal developments and participate fully in the implementation of Personal Development Plan
- Generate statistics for Monthly report to include the Safety and Health KPIs
- Any other duties as requested by the Medical Services Coordinator and or his designate.
Qualification requirements
- A Medical Doctor (holder of Doctor of Medicine Degree from a recognized University), whose registration is applicable to Tanzania.
- Other Qualification(s) in Emergency Medicine/ Advanced Trauma Life Support, Family Medicine or Occupational Health will be advantageous.
- Post graduate study in Occupational Medicine will be an added advantage
Experience and Competencies needed
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in medical practice post internship.
- Experience and skills in trauma management, emergency surgical intervention, Malaria and HIV/AIDS management will be highly favored.
- Ability to interact professionally and effectively with staff and officials at all levels in an international environment.
- Computer literate and demonstrable skills in database, MS excel MS word and ability to produce good reports/summaries.
- Possession of a valid Tanzania Driving License
